Southern railway has announced the cancellation, partial cancellation and diversion of train routes after the derailment of Howrah-Chennai Central Coramandel Express at Jaipur-Keonjhar road on Friday.

Hundreds of anxious people called up the help line provide by the Southern Railway for query about the list of passengers from the derailed train. A senior official at the railways said that of the nine dead four have been identified. The list follows,

1. Pavan Pillai from Berhmpur.

2. A.K.Shina from Cuttack (a railway official).

3. Lakshmi Narayan Manna of West Bengal.

4. Om Prakash Balotia from Howrah.

At present, we have a list of 161 injured persons with 41 having major injuries. Officials have

made special arrangement for carrying the passengers from derailed train to their destinations. Railway police were posted at prepaid auto center to harassment of passengers A special counter has been set up to provide information about compensation to the injured passengers.

Lawyers all over Tamil Nadu staged a protest on Friday condemning the police during the clash between the police personnel and lawyers in the Madras High Court premises on Thursday. The lawyers who are to protect the law of the country underwent many violent protests and even torched many vehicles in their line of site.

In Thirunelveli, a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus and in Chennai, a jeep belonging to the Fire and Rescue services were set ablaze by violent protestors. Advocates staged protests in almost all district headquarters. The Chennai police filed attempt murder case against 150 lawyers in connection with violence in High Court campus. Tamil Nadu Director General of Police Mr. K. P. Jain said that the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation, while no arrests were made till late Friday.

Worse, some lawyers set ablaze the High Court police station again and prevented the fire fighters to enter the court. Commissioner of Police Mr. K. Radhakrishnan said that many lawyers were vacated from the premises and the police will have control over the High Court until further orders were issued. Mr. K. Radhakrishnan also said that 120 police personnel including women were injured during the clash.

The Director General of Police Mr. K. P. Jain has given permission to open fire on anyone who attempts to damage the public properties. Many lawyers tried to take a procession from High Court to Secretariat but were interrupted near war memorial and were taken into custody and were released later

Slumdog Millionaire:

Outline: A teenaged law breaker along with his brother and girl friend ramps through the slums of mumbai. He then parts from his brother and friend after a lot of struggles. He then gets a chance to play “Kaun Banega Crorepati 2” and what he has learnt from his past helps him win the game. The unique texture, manic energy and inventive style makes it a good contender for the Oscars.

Favorites: Best Film and Best Director and also has a hope for Cinematography and best original score.

Milk:

Cast: Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, James Franko.

Director: Gus Vant Sant.

Outline: A documentary. A biopic about the first of America’s first openly gay man who was elected to public office as a member of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors.

Favorites: Best actor and Best Director but not a chance for Best Film.

The curious case of Benjamin Button:

Cast: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Julia Ormond.

Director: David Flincher

Outline: nearly three hours long this is a story about a man who born old dies as baby. Like Titanic, an old woman on her deathbed begins to tell the story of the lover.

Favorites: Film with most nominations but not the one to go with lot of Oscars.

Frost\Nixon:

Cast: Frank Langhella, Michael Sheen, Kevin Bacon

Director: Ron Howard

Outline: A documentary like film goes behind the scenes of one of the most watched televisions programmes in American History- the controversial series of interviews where David Frost finally cracked the tough talking Richard Nixon.

Favorites: Maybe Best Director but not a best film.

The Reader:

Cast: Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes, David Cross

Director: Stephen Daldry

Outline: A slow period film set in Germany about a 15 year old boy having an affair with a woman twice her age.

Favorites: Just the Best Director award I think.

Satyam Computer Services Ltd has recommended the Ministry of Corporate Affairs the removal of Price Waterhouse as the statutory auditors of the company. On being notified, the PW offered its resignation and now the company plans to appoint new auditors. At a meeting here on Saturday the Board of Directors also approved the process for inviting a strategic investor.

The Board was informed that the company was back on its winning ways as it bagged fresh orders and work extensions to the tune of $250 million since Raju confessed to his fraud. It is also said that half the revenues were from new purchased orders. Satyam chairman Kiran Karnik said the board was satisfied with the company’s process. He also said that the funds raised from banks were used in a controlled and phased manner.

Taking note of exit of some senior business leaders, the Board authorized Mr. Murthy to plan to retain key associates in consultation with Boston Consulting Group and special advisors. The meeting being the seventh after the constitution of the new board, was attended by advisors Homi Khusrokhan and Partho Datta, legal advisors and senior BCG representatives.

India and New Zealand played a 1-1 draw in the first of the four match hockey series at the National Hockey Stadium here on Saturday. New Zealand took a lead through captain Phil Burrows in the third minute while India too the Equalizer in the 55th minute with a strike from S.V. Sunil. New Zealand, which lost both of its matches to India in the Punjab Gold Cup at Chandigarh earlier this month, played strongly in the first half taking a 1-0 lead at goal.

However India changed the tactics and the switch to a short passing build up caught the kiwis unawares and Sunil scored from close range past goalkeeper Stephen Graham. India was a transformed bunch in the second half and veteran Dilip Turkey formed the back bone of defense and his measured interceptions denied the opponent much head away in the session. India missed three targets of equalizer as forwards Raj pal Singh, Sunil and Shivendra singh were off target. However Sunil amended the goal to make India draw the match.

The next match takes place here on Sunday.

Valentine’s Day celebration

The bid by Saffron outfitter’s to pick up a storm of the Valentine’s Day celebration invoked many to have great interest on the day. Many couples seemed to be unbothered about this open warning. Pubs, theatres, beaches and everything seemed packed up. Still the activists did find may couples to harass and carried out demonstrations against Valentine’s Day.

In Jammu and Kashmir, activists of an organization called Shiv Sena Hindustan staged a demonstration against Valentine’s Day and burned down cards. In Gwalior police arrested 35 Shiv Sainiks for forcing them into the zoo and targeting couples there. Police too took many activists into custody to prevent any unlawful activities.

A group of activists raided shops selling Valentine’s Day cards in Rourkela. And also reports tell that many were asked to tie rakhi’s to their boys and to add to the misery some were made to marry at the spot where they had been caught by exchanging garlands.

In Karnataka where the activists from Sri Ram Sena first beat up women from a pub, the police detained about 200 of the activists and also the leader of Sri Ram Sena Pramod Muthalik.The action came after a day the center asked the state to take preventive measures against any trouble to crop up on Valentine’s Day. The center describing the activities as “Mischievous and high handed” noted that no organization can disturb any one on Valentine’s Day and if found doing so will be subjected to severe action.

But the most unfortunate thing was that in Ujjain, a brother and sister moving out together were mistaken as couples and the boy was beat up.

The last wicket pair of Daren Powell and Fidel Edwards defied England for 60 deliveries as West Indies clinched a thrilling draw on the final day of third test her on Thursday. West indies was set an target of 503 for victory, batted through the final day from 143 for 3 to finish at 370 for 9 when bad light altered play four overs before at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

Powell contributed 22 off 55 balls while Edward remained unbeaten at 5 off 26 deliveries. The pair batted carefully for 36 minutes until the darkening skies forced the umpires Daryl Harper of Australia and Rudy Koertzen of South Africa offered the batsmen the decision to end play which they gladly accepted. West Indies have already won a match and therefore with a 1-0 lead they clinched the title.

“Yes it’s a victory for us. I have to commend the guys for the effort they put in. It’s tremendous to come out with a draw”, the West Indies Captain, Chris Gayle said. Gayle praised Edwards, whose match saving innings was the third of this kind from him. ”Its customary for him and he has done it again”, Gayle said.

England dominated the third test and sniffed for a series leveling victory but their hopes shattered with their bowler’s inability to take the last wicket. “It’s pretty difficult to take. We had to work exceptionally hard to work for our wickets there in the fourth innings”, the England skipper Andrew Strauss said.

The key benchmark indices are trading flat in the afternoon trade of Monday. The market breadth has turned negative from positive. IT stocks have gained. Public sector oil marketing companies fell as the crude oil price recovered. Reliance Industries extended losses. Grasim Industries fell almost 5%. Asian markets which opened before Indian market were mostly in the red.

Oil rose over $1 to near $115 a barrel as investors eyed a potential supply threat from Tropical storm Fay to oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico.

At 12:24 IST, the BSE 30-share Sensex was down 1.85 points or 0.01% to 14,722.33. The key benchmark indices had recovered after opening weak dampened by latest economic data which showed India’s wholesale price index rose to a 16-year high. At day’s high of 14,824.92 hit during the mid-morning trade, the index gained 100.74 points. At the day’s low of 14,602.12, the Sensex lost 122.06 in early trade.

The S&P CNX Nifty was down 15.85 points or 0.36% to 4,414.85.

The BSE Mid-Cap index was down 0.12% to 5,816.52 and the BSE Small-Cap index was down 0.06% at 7,106.

The market breadth turned negative on BSE with 1,122 shares advancing as compared to 1,145 that declined. 98 shares remained unchanged.

India’s largest private sector firm by market capitalisation and oil refiner Reliance Industries fell 2.47% at Rs 2,219.70.

Great Offshore (up 4.31% to Rs 454.10), Gujarat NRE Coke (up 3.75% to Rs 108), Sun Pharmaceuticals (up 3.61% to Rs 1,500), Indian Bank (up 3.39% to Rs 114.40) edged higher from BSE’s A group shares.

India Infoline (down 4.64% to Rs 147), Sintex Industries (down 3.41% to Rs 313), Pantaloon Retail (down 2.97% to Rs 367.10) and Hindustan Construction Company (down 2.93% to Rs 96.10) edged lower from A group stocks.

Reliance Natural Resources clocked the highest volume of 59.76 lakh shares on BSE. Kaashyap Technologies (30.68 lakh shares), Vishal Information Technologies ( 28.86 lakh shares), IFCI (22.39 lakh shares) and Ispat Industries (20.75 lakh shares) were the other volume toppers in that order.

Public sector oil marketing fell as crude oil price bounced back from a recent low. BPCL (down 2.69% to Rs 307.65), Indian Oil Corporation (down 1.27% to Rs 434.95) and HPCL (down 2.29% to Rs 218) edged lower.
