Sandal Wood Carving

Sandal Wood Carving: Sandal wood being found in the jungles of Karnataka, the craft of carving has developed over the years. Today the wood is scarce and therefore its sale is controlled. Carving of figures of God and Goddesses of all religions is done on a very large scale. Besides other daily use things like hand fans and boxes etc. are also carved. The work is very intricate and the carvings done in Palaces and Temples. Incidents from the epics and Puranas are beautifully carved on scented wood. The sixes range from small to big sandal wood pieces. However, very big sandal wood pieces are rare now a days.
Horn Carving: Very intricate and beautiful articles are made out of horns of cattle. Conches, flower vases and models of animals and birds are made out of horns. Many articles of decoration to be hung on the walls are made. This carving of horns is all very delicate and intricate. Kumta and Honaver in Uttara Kannada District and Khanpuram in Belgaum districts are centers for this work.
